Play: it’s simple. Yet oh-so complicated

When you look at a child, there’s no doubt in your mind:
they’re built for play.

Those inquiring minds and little fingers were made for exploring, creating, investigating and mess-making...

And the latest in brain science agrees.

When it comes to learning, play is the natural language of every child.

THE PROBLEM IS THE GROWNUPS!

More specifically, it’s the status quo —

  • The piles of paperwork, the rigid milestones, your well-intentioned but time-poor peers who just don’t seem to “get” play…
  • The anxious parents who fear their child will fall behind if they don’t learn their ABC’s and 123’s at just the right time...
  • And the system at large that makes you doubt yourself and what you believe in your heart to be true...
leaves

When children are given opportunities to play,

they flourish before our eyes.

You want to give children more of the
wonder-led learning experiences they need and deserve.

Tom

“Joining The Wonder League has given me the reassurance that I’m giving my students the best education I possibly can — and the confidence to “be me”.

I have looked at so many memberships to help me in this career but The Wonder League is so personal and friendly. The team will do whatever they can to help you succeed and not leave you on your own.”

THERE’S JUST ONE CATCH...

No one warned you that “play”
would feel this hard

Defending the importance of play in children’s education
Advocating for it
And practicing it

Is challenging (to put it lightly)

  • Letting children “lead the way” means unlearning everything you’ve been taught about traditional education, and you often worry if you’re giving children everything they need.
  • Embracing the open-ended, messy nature of play feels impossible when you’re required to plan around standards and curriculums that leave little room for creativity.
  • You wish you had more time to do all the things you want to do — but translating all your ideas + inspiration into a practical plan can feel like a second job on it’s own.
  • Being a play-based educator can feel lonely and thankless if you aren’t surrounded by people who already get it. So much of your energy is spent helping others understand what you do and why it matters.
fern-leaf

Despite all this... you are still here

Despite the strange mix of wonder and frustration you feel most days...

And the resistance you face from other educators, parents and an entire culture that values productivity and paperwork above all else…

You are still here.

Because you know what is at stake.

Because your deep respect for children and their needs is unwavering (even if your confidence feels a little shaky at times).

Because those moments of wonder —

When a child makes a new connection, when learning and joy collide, when you see that glint of discovery in their eyes?

Those are your reasons why.

The work you are doing matters
and it is essential

You are shaping brains and changing children’s lives every single day.

No matter what is happening in that child’s life, you are there for them: advocating for them, believing in them, and supporting them in a system that can barely see them — let alone give them what they truly need.

It’s hard to create wonder when it feels like the odds are stacked against you. But it is possible.

  • It’s not about creating the perfect atelier with hundreds of loose parts or twinkling lights on the ceiling (you don’t need any of that to connect with the child in front of you).
  • It’s not about “convincing” every parent and your peers that what you’re doing is academically sound and developmentally appropriate (you don’t need everyone’s approval to make a difference).
  • And it’s not about throwing caution to the wind and letting go of control (instead, you can walk down a path that helps you sense what each child needs and respond to it in the moment. It’s called Play-Activated Learning™, and you’ll learn more about that below.)

But it is about trust: in yourself, and in your students.

And connection.

And building the confidence that you can give each child what they need to feel heard, seen and supported — without draining yourself in the process.

If you’re reading this page, you don’t have to struggle or guess your way through it anymore. And you certainly don’t have to do it alone.

That is why we are here.

Carla

“For the first time… I wasn’t alone in bringing the theory to life.

The Wonder League gave me the information to back up and say, “this is why we need to do this.” It’s not about being given a list of rules you have to follow, it’s about discovering what your philosophy is as a teacher.

For the first time, I had something I could reference. I could provide the research behind it, and had the support of The Wonder League community and Sally. I wasn’t alone in bringing theory to life.

You don't need to go back and rip up everything you've been doing for the last five years. Everything that Sally gives you is an improvement to the knowledge you already have.

There's something for everybody inside The Wonder League.”

ELEMENT 1

Emergent Month-by-Month Play-Based Curriculums

As a Wonder League member, you’ll receive expert-crafted play invitations delivered straight to your inbox — every single month.

Element 1 Lessons Mockup
blue stroke line

A classic mantra in early childhood education goes like this:

"The only curriculum you need is the child."

blue stroke line

In a perfect world, we agree.

But the world you work in is far from perfect.

You’ve been asked to do the impossible and bring the magic of your classroom or atelier online.

(Or from behind a mask. Or in a completely different setting than you’re used to, with limits on your equipment and supplies.)

Your time is consumed more than ever by admin, meetings, prep and clean-up.

You’re normally brimming with bright ideas, but the space you have to be creative seems to be shrinking by the day.

And if you work in a public setting, you really do need a curriculum — outdated as it may be, your students’ progress (and your performance) is regularly benchmarked against it.

It feels like you’re left trying to squeeze “play” into the margins of your day.

You don’t want to compromise on your values and you could really use a helping hand.

We’ve got you.

It’s called The Wonder Box, and it might just be your favorite thing about the Wonder League when you join.

nest

How it works

On the first day of each month, you’ll find a brand-new “Wonder Box” waiting for you inside your member portal, packed full of play invitations and resources to help you create deep, wonder-led learning experiences with your students.

What’s inside every box

  • At least 4 unique “Play Investigation Packs” with guided walkthroughs. Dive into letters, mark-making and so much more through open-ended, child-led activities that make space for each student to explore their interests in their own unique way.
  • Dedicated “Family Packs” with recommendations for how parents can continue the wonder at home with children each month and build on the work you have done in class.
  • "Conversation packs" to help you clarify & explain how each activity supports the child’s development: academically, cognitively, physically and socially. We help you translate all the goodness happening in your classroom, so others can understand it too.
cheryl

“I’ve learned and practiced a lot over the past 50 years — but the missing ingredient was recognizing wonder.

This is the first approach to childhood learning where I feel I can truly be myself.

Along with more confidence and acceptance of who I am — I have found what drives me and discovered a new passion for experimenting and learning alongside the children.”

CHERYL D.

Why you’ll love it

star

We help you guide without guessing (or directing)

Each “play pack” in every Wonder Box is designed to help you introduce a concept or idea, then watch it come to life as you follow the children’s lead.

Rather than “instructing” or “directing”, Wonder Box invitations give you a clear foundation to start from, while making space for the child’s ideas as they discover their own solutions and build skills at their own pace.

star

There when you need it, however you want to use it.

Are you looking for new play invitations or a little help with how best to introduce new concepts to children? Perfect! Dip inside any box for a goodie-bag of new ideas and the guidance you need to bring them to life.

Want to use our ideas as a starting point for your own? We love that too! Customize and evolve each pack as you please.

Or, do you just need some creative ideas for those days when your energy is low? Go ahead and lean on us.

star

Support you can trust (and more time in your day).

We have 2 team members fully-dedicated to crafting the activities and resources inside The Wonder Box every month. Each Wonder Box contributor comes from a play-based background and has extensive experience working in these settings.

You’ll get one-of-a-kind, rigorous resources that are true to your philosophy, without having to develop play invitations or activities from scratch. All you need to do is show up ready to play.

Best of all?

When you join The Wonder League, you receive access to a brand- new Wonder Box every month…

Plus every box we’ve created so far (12 already: enough for an entire year!) for as long as you’re a member!

Vania

“Before joining The Wonder League I struggled to explain the importance of play and how children learn through play. I also struggled with finding play invitations and ideas that were not as overwhelming to me as Pinterest… and that were more than just beautiful in photos.

Wonder League teachings have the best loose parts, hygge, play invitations, and neuroscience trainings I have done, and the live sessions are super dynamic and help me build my confidence as an educator.

I feel a sense of belonging with people from all over the world – I feel connected and empowered. The Wonder League, Sally, and the team have changed my life by giving me a place where I feel I belong and I can be myself.”

ELEMENT 2

Your Play-Activated Learning™ Pathways

(and the complete Wonder League training library at your fingertips)

Element 2 Lessons Mockup

Early Childhood Educators have been begging us for a “Play 101 Training” that provides a firm grounding in the theory and practice of play-based education.

Our latest (and most exciting) addition to The Wonder League is the Play-Activated Learning™ Pathways — and it’s the essential training you’ve been waiting for.

This training is where we recommend all new members begin their journey upon joining. You’ll use it to identify what’s working and what’s not in your classroom, and which solution makes sense for you and your students.

pinecone

In less than 60 minutes, you’ll learn:

  • The four stages of “Play-Activated Learning™” and how they typically show up (or get stuck) in your classroom or atelier.
  • The 6 essential elements of a Play-Activated Learning™ environment — and how to create (or level-up) your own.
  • How to determine what’s working (and what’s not) in your support of children’s learning and play.
  • Your specific, clear next steps to evolve and troubleshoot your play-based practice.

Once you’ve completed the Play-Activated Pathways Training, you’ll instantly unlock your 1hr PD certificate — plus unlimited access to the entire Wonder League Training Library for as long as you’re a member.

We have completely re-organized our entire training library around the four “stages” of The Play Activated Learning™ Pathway.

Simply choose your focus area and explore all the relevant trainings to get what you need, exactly when you need it.

Here’s a peek at what’s inside…

Stage 1:

Environment & Analysis

Learn how to use your physical space and environment to encourage deep learning and a sense of belonging for every student in your class.

In this stage, you’ll build a robust understanding of how to collaborate with students, parents and teachers to create a space that sets you up for success, even if you’re short on time or resources.

Trainings you’ll explore at this stage include:

  • The 3rd Teacher Bootcamp: how to set up your space for wonder
  • The Art of Child Guidance (includes a mini-bootcamp on virtual learning & engagement!)
  • The Atelier Fast-Track & The Loose Parts Toolkit

Stage 2:

Observation & Fascination

Become a “Play Detective” as you master the art of observing children while their interests unfold.

In this stage, you’ll learn to identify what is really happening when each child plays (the “story behind the story”) and how to observe the developmental growth markers that emerge during play: cognitive, social, emotional and physical.

Trainings you’ll explore at this stage include:

  • The Observation Masterclass: create your personal methodology to track and support the development of children’s learning in your play-based classroom
  • The Play Mapping Masterclass: how to see the whole child in play
  • Deep Play: The Brain Science Behind Play
  • The Play Code: Unlocking the Power of Play
pyramid diagram

Stage 3:

Prompting & Occupation

Truly understand what drives a child, and how they see their world by tapping into their unique interests. This is key to creating a highly effective learning environment, instead of a mediocre one.

During the prompting phase, you’ll learn to nurture and support children’s play through invitations, provocations and highly-effective play prompts.

Trainings you’ll explore at this stage include:

  • Mastering Play Invitations (just added!)
  • Designing Play Invitations
  • Teaching Young Children Virtually
  • Playing with Loose Parts

Stage 4:

Validation & Articulation

The Validation Phase is all about the communication we have with children to ensure that they feel seen, heard and understood.

This is “soul work” that allows you to connect with your highest calling as an educator. If you can remember just one teacher who had an impact on you over your lifetime, then you know the power of this (and all) of the phases of Play-Activated Learning.

Trainings you’ll explore at this stage include:

  • The Learning Stories Masterclass
  • The Fundamentals of Documentation (Inside Rosa Parks ECE)
  • The 5 R’s of Documentation
Deb

“I wasn’t sure how relevant the trainings would be to me since I live outside America, but they are amazing and there’s so much variety!

The Wonder League has had a huge impact on me both personally and professionally. Before I joined, I was feeling isolated and doubting my abilities as an educator. The resources and support inside I’ve gained as a member have helped me become a stronger advocate for play within my program.

If you are thinking about joining the Wonder League, do it! You won’t regret it. You’ll learn so much both from Sally and her team as well as from other educators from around the world.”

“My Wonder League journey has truly changed my life and helped me to become the teacher I am today.”

“Before joining the Wonder League, I felt alone as an educator. Other teachers didn’t quite get the way in which I “taught” because it didn’t fit the traditional mold. When I found The Wonder League I felt like I had finally found someone who understood and inspired me. I found “home.”

The support I received through the community was honestly life/career-saving! The friendships I have made have continued to be a strong support system and an amazing brainstorming group. I enjoy the different perspectives, the sharing of ideas and the relationships being built.

With the Wonder League, there is no “cookie-cutter”/“do it this way or you are doing it wrong” approach. It allows for personal growth in a safe environment, where we can be honest and push/explore our personal beliefs, about children, families, and education. It allows for the continuous evolution of ourselves as educators.

The monthly calls and reflections keep me growing, going deeper into who I am, why I teach and who I want to be both in the classroom and in life as they are one and the same.”

KAREN C.

It began with an idea... and turned into a world-wide movement. Now, you’re invited:

Sally

I’m Sally Haughey, the Founder of Fairy Dust Teaching & The Wonder League.

What began in 2010 as a desire to share my own journey through play-based education has grown into a thriving team that supports a community of over 180,000 educators — and a worldwide movement that is changing the face of childhood education, day by day.

Back in 2010, I was one of the first educators to begin sharing information and resources about play-based learning. Having spent 25+ years working in the frontlines of early childhood education, I knew there was so much work to be done — and so I began sharing what I had learned about how to bring play-based practices into public school settings that often left little room for imagination, curiosity and wonder.

Fast forward 12 years, and there is more information (and opinions!) available to early childhood educators than ever before — yet the path remains frustratingly unclear.

  • Perhaps you’re reading this page because you’ve taken all the right steps:

You’ve thrown away the plastic toys, brought in the loose parts, and are getting out into nature with your students… but something still isn’t “clicking” — and your ideas just aren’t connecting.

  • Or it feels like you’re constantly fighting to have your legitimacy and professionalism recognized — While you’re witnessing magic unfold in your classroom, your co-workers just think you’re “cute” ( ← I used to get that one a lot) while parents are wondering why their child is bringing home less worksheets than their peers.

  • And even when you reach a place where you feel more self-assured,
    the work never truly ends.

There is always new research emerging, new ideas to try out, and new students who make you question everything you “thought” you knew about working with children.

All those years ago, I wish someone had told me that bringing my best into my classroom required 3 essential things:

The tools to sharpen my practice, support and feedback for when I get stuck, and a community who sees the depth and limitless potential of this work — and lifts me up when I’m feeling doubtful or unsure.

That’s exactly what we offer inside The Wonder League. No matter where you are in your personal journey through play-based education, we are here for you.

Whether you’ve got a fully-stocked atelier that would put Disneyland to shame, or you’re trying to create wonder at a small table (or through a laptop screen) in your spare room at home, we’re here to help you deepen your knowledge, put new ideas into practice, and stop second-guessing whether you’re giving your students what they need to thrive.

Bottom line?

The Wonder League is the place where you’ll transform those big ideas and possibilities for your work into a tangible “how” (and a whole lot more confidence).

It looks like having the skills to show up each day feeling energized and ready to play — knowing that you’ve got the toolkit to:

Practice It

Go deep with a curated library of training and ongoing support to cultivate wonder in your classroom — the kind of hands-on, child-led learning that helps them become well-rounded, well-prepared human beings.

Explain It

Become adept at documenting each child’s process of learning. Learn how to connect the magic unfolding in your classroom with the standards, benchmarks and skills children are building along the way.

Capture It

Step into your role as an expert communicator and confident storyteller as you translate the why behind your approach, build support for your ideas and rally community around your work.

This is how we change the face of childhood education together — and make this work feel more impactful and lighter:

Jasmeen2

“The Wonder League profoundly influences me. It has changed my work life day and night.”

“I am thoroughly inspired, motivated, challenged, and enthusiastic. Not only do children pick up on my enthusiasm, my co-teachers do as well.

My colleagues already have noticed my changes in how I am so lively and more motivated and enjoy being with the kids. I never want to lose sight of the joy of being with young children.

I have become more passionate about providing provocations to provoke their thinking and then observing them and documenting their journey, which is shared with families. My colleagues are also asking for thoughts and offering praise for my skills.

Thank you to The Wonder League, who has allowed me to pull out the capabilities in me! I feel blessed to work with exceptional children, families, co-workers, educators, and Wonder Warriors!”

“The Wonder League was the light I needed to guide me back to the basic path of child-directed learning.”

“I'd been working with children for over three decades. My heart was still there, but my passion was dwindling.

I'd fallen into the trap of thinking for the children and not trusting or encouraging their process. I wanted a process that helped me prepare children for the future and support their journey toward independent thinking.

The Wonder League brought back the magic and wonder of discovery in learning what the children are interested in, at their pace (not mine). There is a wealth of information just a click away. It is supportive and truly open to sharing ideas, without judgement or attitude.

Sally’s approach is so relatable and easy to put into action. I also feel less pressure to "teach". I listen and hear so much more. I discover, investigate, and PLAY!”

HEIDI G.

The Wonder League is for any play-based educator who needs a little extra...

Energy

You’re working harder than ever to give your students what they need. You want to feel supported without worrying that you’re taking shortcuts or not honoring the philosophy of the play-based approach. Let us help you with some of the heavy lifting so you can bring your energy and inspiration back to life.

Purpose

The days are so busy that it feels like you’re barely scraping the surface of what’s possible with your students… and when you do, it seems like you’re the only one who notices. We see you — and we’ll help you create deep & meaningful learning experiences with your students (the kind that they will remember for the rest of their lives).

Clarity

You love the play-based philosophy but putting it into practice feels messy and you constantly question if you’re doing it “right”. With a combination of the Play-Activated Learning™ Pathway, our extensive training library and our regular community calls, we’ll help you clear the clutter and focus on the next right step.

Confidence

Practicing play is one thing — but the ability to articulate its power so that others see it and support it is another skill entirely. Fortunately, you’ll build this muscle inside The Wonder League. Become a better communicator and confidently explain the magic of your work to others… so they’ll never question “why aren’t there more worksheets?” again.

mary

“This work has brought me to a place where I am certain that what I'm doing has value.”

“I realized that I really wasn't teaching anything with the approach I was using, and I had a problem with that. I felt like I had to somehow justify what I did during the day to parents, and I didn't have a lot of support within the groups I was a part of. The Wonder League took the mental block away so I could see beyond and expand.

Every single part of The Wonder League has so much value. There's not a specific map that you have to follow, you can go in whatever direction you want. You can be whatever you need to be.

The Wonder League has given me so much in this past year, not just in the hard parts of the pandemic but in validating what I already believed and practiced with the children I have been blessed to spend my days with. It has helped me find my professional voice again.”

“The value outweighs the cost”

“Before joining The Wonder League, I was trying to adapt to other educators and their ways of thinking and doing.

When I became a member, I finally found my purpose in my teaching practice. Today, I can confidently advocate for the importance of play-based education to others and truly focus on the needs and wants of the children (versus just the desires of policies and standard expectations).

The Wonder League is unique because it provides so many different opportunities for knowledge and development as well as support from Sally and her team. The variety of development opportunities and the knowledge of the staff creates a real community of educators.

I would highly recommend this league to someone who wants to delve deeper into who they are personally as an educator in order to enrich their teaching practice. The value outweighs the cost.”
